Children's Rights and Teacher's Responsibility - Experts' Opinion

Conflicts between students and teachers have repeatedly arisen in educational institutions, becoming a subject of discussion in society.

Gulzat Isabekova, a psychologist at the Child Assistance Center of the Bishkek City Hall, emphasizes that in the past, the use of violence in the educational process was considered normal, which still leads to differing opinions in society.

“Previously, a teacher who raised a hand to a student was perceived as a common occurrence. However, this did not lead to improved academic results. Research shows that the use of violence does not yield positive results in education,” she noted.

Now, according to her, students who become victims of violence may face bullying from their peers, which exacerbates their psychological state. A child may begin to feel fear, become aggressive, or lose interest in studying, indicating that violence is not a method of teaching.

Isabekova also shared that during her visits to schools, for example, in the village of Kozhomkul, she asked children about their desire to become teachers. None of them raised their hands, explaining that the teaching profession is difficult and undervalued, and that teachers have to shout in classes due to the large number of students.

In her opinion, the work of educators is indeed challenging, and they may face emotional burnout and disobedience from students. Nevertheless, a teacher must control their emotions and apply physical force only in extreme cases.

“It is important to conduct training for teachers to help them avoid burnout and support them. When we work with children, even a brief time in class can be difficult. But violence in upbringing does not yield results,” the psychologist added.

In light of the incident at school No. 87 in Bishkek, where a teacher used physical force against a student, the Department of Education initiated an investigation into the case. During the investigation, serious violations of norms were identified, including the Law "On Education," the KR Code "On Children," as well as ethical standards of the profession.

The department reported that the rights of the student were violated, which is unacceptable. As a result of the investigation, the school principal received a disciplinary sanction, and the teacher was dismissed.

Bubuysha Jumukova, an experienced mathematics teacher from the T. Tynymbaev Secondary School in the village of Birinchi Mai, believes that old teaching methods are not suitable for modern children and suggests new approaches to conflict resolution.

“Today's generation requires a different approach. One cannot simply refer to past experience. Teachers should adapt their methods to modern realities,” she added.

Jumukova also noted that students may have their own problems, and the teacher must remain calm in difficult situations.

Pedagogical ethics recommends avoiding a raised tone and showing gentleness in communication with students. In cases where children do not listen, it is important to control one's emotions and try to ease the tension with humor.

The Minister of Education has taken control of the situation. In this regard, additional explanatory activities for teachers will be conducted nationwide, and psychologists will be sent to educational institutions to organize training aimed at creating a safe educational environment.
