The Supreme Court will consider the petition of journalist Mahabat Tajibek kyzy's defense

The United Nations has recognized her arrest as arbitrary

On February 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM, a hearing will take place in the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic regarding the petition of Mahabat Tajibek kyzy's defense, a journalist sentenced to six years for "calls for mass riots."

This petition is a result of the official conclusion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which recognized the arrest and detention of Tajibek kyzy as arbitrary and in violation of international norms.

In January 2024, the journalist was detained along with colleagues from the Temirov LIVE and "Ayt, Ayt dese" projects on charges of inciting riots. In October of the same year, the Lenin District Court of Bishkek sentenced her to six years, a decision that was subsequently upheld by the Bishkek City Court and the Supreme Court.

Despite the fact that Mahabat is a mother of a minor child, the court denied her request for a postponement of the sentence, although such an option is provided for by national legislation.

According to the UN conclusion, the journalist's arrest is a direct result of her professional activities and the exercise of freedom of expression. The Working Group called for her immediate release, compensation for unlawful detention, and an investigation into the officials involved in the arrest.

The hearing will take place at: Toktobolota Abdymomunova St., 205, Bishkek.
