New rules have been introduced in Rome regarding access to the Trevi Fountain, known for tourists traditionally throwing coins into it. As reported by Meduza, now there will be a fee of two euros for the opportunity to approach this famous site from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Children under five years old, residents of Rome, and individuals with disabilities are exempt from this fee. Additionally, access to the fountain will remain free during the evening and early morning hours.
According to local authorities, the introduction of paid visits could bring the city treasury between 6.5 to 20 million euros per year. These funds will be used for the maintenance of the fountain and to pay staff salaries.
The coins that tourists continue to throw into the fountain will be donated to the charity organization Caritas di Roma, which provides assistance to those in need. Each year, approximately 1.5 million euros worth of coins are extracted from the fountain.
