According to Torobaev, farmers will be provided with water through electronic meters.
This year, the volume of water in the reservoirs of Kyrgyzstan has significantly decreased. This was reported by Bakyt Torobaev, the Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh committee dedicated to agricultural policy.
Currently, approximately 884 million cubic meters of water are accumulated in 498 reservoirs across the country, which is 30–35% less than in the same period last year. The total design capacity of all reservoirs is 1 billion 757 million cubic meters.
Torobaev also noted that by 2026, it is planned to cultivate 1 million 250 thousand hectares of arable land, of which 885 thousand hectares will be irrigated. To provide these fields with the water needed for 4–5 irrigations, about 6.3 billion cubic meters will be required.
This year, 12.3 billion soms have been allocated for the development of the irrigation system. These funds will be directed towards:
- cleaning and repairing 776 km of canals;
- laying 657 thousand square meters of concrete pavement;
- restoring 590 hydraulic structures;
- repairing 508 water measurement posts, 91 pumping stations, and 170 pumping units;
- updating 46 pumping units;
- installing about 1.5 thousand electronic water meters;
- putting 225 collector-drainage systems in order.
Bakyt Torobaev emphasized that the water supply system for farmers will gradually be transitioned to electronic accounting, which will allow for more efficient control of resource distribution and reduce water losses.
