The potential number of infected individuals may be significantly higher due to the asymptomatic nature of the disease.
According to data presented at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh committee, approximately 430 thousand citizens of Kyrgyzstan suffer from viral hepatitis B, C, and D. This information was announced by Zuridin Nurmatov, head of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for the Control of Viral Infections of the NGO "Preventive Medicine".
He noted that official statistics may not reflect the real situation, as data is collected based on patients' visits to medical institutions. As a result, many cases remain unrecognized.
According to estimates, about 3.3% of the population is infected with hepatitis B, which amounts to approximately 231 thousand people. Hepatitis C affects 2.3% of the population, while the infection rate for hepatitis D is 0.6%.
The expert emphasized that viral hepatitis often occurs without obvious symptoms, which is why many people remain unaware of their illness for a long time.
The highest prevalence of hepatitis is observed among the adult population. Particularly high rates of hepatitis B infection have been recorded in the age group of 30-39 years (approximately 6.3%) and 40-49 years (4.3%). At the same time, the infection rate among children is significantly lower.
