The deputy emphasized the importance of professional journalism in the context of changes in the media sphere.
Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Elvira Surabaldiyeva expressed her opinion on the significance of media in building trust and dialogue between the state and citizens. This statement was made at the Media Talk "Rethinking the Role of Media in Kyrgyzstan," which took place on March 27 in Bishkek. The event was organized by the Media Action Platform of Kyrgyzstan as part of the CARAVAN project funded by the European Union.

According to Surabaldiyeva, the modern media sector significantly goes beyond the simple dissemination of news.
In this context, she mentioned the profound transformation experienced by the media sphere in Kyrgyzstan, where technologies, work formats, and funding sources are changing. She also noted the update of the legislative framework, including the adoption of a new law on mass media.
Speaking about global trends, the deputy emphasized the growing importance of professional journalism.
“Only professional journalists can provide information with accuracy and depth, remaining a reliable source for society,” — she stated.
Surabaldiyeva also stressed that it is important not only to have a law but also to apply it practically.
“It is necessary for the implementation of the law to consider the interests of both society and the professional media community,” — she added.

Continuing the discussion on trust, Surabaldiyeva noted that journalism performs an important connecting function. Media, according to her, serve as a channel of communication between the state, business, and citizens, including migrants, for whom access to verified information is especially important.
In a broader context, she emphasized that the media landscape is becoming part of the national security system. This requires attention to issues of disinformation, public stability, and adherence to international standards of freedom of speech.
The development of the media sector, she said, should take into account both security issues and the need to maintain independent and professional journalism.
The deputy also highlighted key areas such as supporting regional media, developing quality journalism, including investigative journalism, and ensuring the sustainability of media organizations.
“Any decisions should be made based on dialogue, professional expertise, and mutual respect,” — she concluded.
