Etiquette and Moral Culture of Modernity

A brief overview of the evolution of ideas about etiquette in the context of world culture provides an opportunity to analyze and evaluate the diversity of etiquette rules, regulations, and prescriptions. At the early stages of its development, etiquette was identified with the action of magical rituals. In a class-based society, court etiquette served as a tool regulating the arrangement of political power among classes and estates. Finally, the emerging trends towards the democratization of etiquette in bourgeois culture find their continuation in modern society.
Thanks to the long and rich experience of forming etiquette culture, modern society today has several main types of etiquette:
• Court etiquette - a strictly regulated order and forms of interaction established and still observed at the courts of monarchs;
• Diplomatic etiquette - rules of conduct for diplomats and other officials during interactions with each other at various diplomatic receptions, visits, negotiations;
• Military etiquette - a set of generally accepted rules, norms, and manners of behavior for military personnel in all areas of their activities;
• Civil etiquette - a collection of rules, traditions, and conventions observed by citizens when communicating with each other.
Today's world presents itself as a multicultural community. The diversity of modern etiquette norms has its roots in the customs and traditions of the distant past of almost all peoples. Therefore, the specifics of modern civil etiquette are largely determined by the influence of historical and national traditions, the dependence on the specific conditions of formation and functioning of each particular society, as well as the degree of development of democratic institutions within it.
