Hero of the Soviet Union Panteliev Gavriil Frolovich

Gavriil Frolovich Panteliev was born in 1923 in the village of Gavrilovna, Sokuluk district of the Kyrgyz SSR, into a peasant family. He was Russian. A member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He was drafted into the Soviet Army in 1942. Guard Senior Lieutenant, Chief of Staff of a Rifle Battalion.

He began his combat path in the Great Patriotic War on the Stalingrad front in July 1942, then fought on the Voronezh and Steppe fronts. In battles against the Nazi invaders, G. F. Panteliev proved himself to be a brave and courageous warrior.

For his displayed bravery and courage in battles on the approaches to the Volga, he was awarded two Orders of the Red Star and the medal "For the Defense of Stalingrad".

On October 26, 1943, for crossing the Dnieper, successfully securing and expanding the bridgehead on the western bank, and for the courage and heroism displayed, G. F. Panteliev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

After the war, Gavriil Frolovich lived in the city of Kursk and died in 1979.

VALOR AND HEROISM

In the room of military glory at the secondary school in the village of Gavrilovka, Sokuluk district, I read an essay by a tenth-grade student. The essay was not among the best in terms of style and grammar, but it radiated the light of deep soulfulness, sonly love for the native land, for the Motherland, for humanity. There are lines in this essay: "I have a name.

The name is not flashy — Gavriil, but I am proud of it, for my fellow countryman, Hero of the Soviet Union Gavriil Frolovich Panteliev, bore the same name. Now, while we are still sitting at our desks, when all our lives are a mystery of the future, who will say, who will guess that we are heroes! But when the time of trials comes, let the Motherland and my people know: we will defend them..."

On June 13, 1944, in the Kremlin, Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin presented Senior Lieutenant Panteliev with the Order of Lenin and the "Golden Star" of the Hero of the Soviet Union. Between this event and the graduation evening of the tenth graders in the village of Gavrilovka on June 21, 1941, there were just under three years. Just three years! An unknown boy became a Hero. A feat is perhaps an instantaneous explosion of all the best qualities of a person in the name of the triumph of life. A feat, heroism. Their value lies not only in achieving a specific goal, sometimes beyond capabilities, but also in that everlasting shine of an example that illuminates the thoughts of future generations.

Gavriil Frolovich Panteliev's peers, recalling the distant 1941, particularly emphasize that on that day when the war broke out, they suddenly grew up; their yesterday's notebooks seemed a distant childhood. They rushed to the military enlistment offices. They stood in line, and, holding their breath, lied to the military officer, adding a year or two to their age. Panteliev was no different from these boys. For five months he knocked on the doors of the military commissariat until he was sent to the Grozny Military Infantry School.

The enemy was advancing towards the Volga, and the cadets of the military infantry school stood to defend their native land. Three days separated the quiet offices of the educational institution from deadly battles. Young cadets came under heavy fire and bombings. It seemed that the gunfire lasted endlessly. The enemy machine guns did not fall silent. It was probably then, in that first battle, that Panteliev overcame the tension and fear that many untested soldiers experience. There were many encounters with death afterward, but that first battle was the most important: a duel of willpower and fear.

The enemy was preparing for an assault.

— Stand to the death! — the command swept through the chain of fighters, who were hiding behind the parapets. In such moments, for some reason, one wants to remember their whole life, albeit short, but in which there are your loved ones, relatives, beloved. But no, it doesn't work; thoughts get tangled, and the schoolboy romanticism and the idea of war overshadow reality, and in it, the line is clearly seen beyond which you may no longer exist.

They advanced like a black avalanche under the cover of tanks. 500, 400 meters, 300...

— Fire!

One by one, comrades-in-arms fell. An enemy bullet sang past his temple, but, as Panteliev loved to repeat later, — it was not fate. The next bullet hit his right hand. However, the machine gun did not fall silent. How Gavriil managed this, he could not comprehend later, in the hospital, but he remembered one thing — anger, incredible, inhuman hatred for the enemy. In that battle, his crew destroyed 120 enemy soldiers and officers. And he, Panteliev, a boy from a distant Kyrgyz village, was marked by the Motherland and awarded the Order of the Red Star.

The battle for the Volga continued. Panteliev returned to the ranks, to Lieutenant Senchilo's company. And a new battle.

The Nazis, this time under the cover of tanks, launched their third attack. The battle lasted several hours. Three giants were knocked out by anti-tank rifles, and the enemy infantry faltered. Panteliev was seriously wounded but did not leave the battlefield. For his steadfastness, endurance, and courage, the command nominated Sergeant Panteliev for a second Order of the Red Star and appointed him deputy commander of the company.

When he returned to his unit after recovery, the Soviet troops on the Stalingrad front went on the offensive, encircling and eliminating the 330,000-strong army of Paulus.

On February 18, 1943, Lieutenant Panteliev was accepted as a candidate member of the VKP(b). In his application, he wrote: "I ask to accept me as a candidate member of the party. I want to finally cleanse our land of fascist invaders, being a communist."

In March 1943, for exemplary execution of combat missions, the 72nd Rifle Division, in which Panteliev served, was awarded the Guards title. Soon the division was transferred to Belgorod and took up defensive positions in the Bezlyudovka area near the Northern Donets. Here, Gavriil Panteliev was promoted to Senior Lieutenant; in June he became the commander of a rifle company, and then the chief of staff of the battalion.

On the night of September 26, 1943, the first battalion of the 224th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 72nd Guards Krasnograd Rifle Division approached the Dnieper near Old and New Orlik. There, across the river, in the village of Borodaevka, the enemy had fortified. The gray and sluggish Dnieper seemed not to participate in the deadly confrontation of men. It majestically carried its waters, delighting with its beauty.

The words of the order were concise: "Cross the Dnieper using improvised means, occupy the village of Borodaevka, and drive the enemy from the height dominating the village." Chief of Staff of the battalion Gavriil Panteliev began preparing the operation to cross the river, sending reconnaissance to the right bank. The scouts did not return, and then Panteliev decided to conduct the reconnaissance himself. Here is what is said about this fact in the report of the commander of the 224th Guards Rifle Regiment, Guard Lieutenant Colonel Ulasovets: "On the night of September 26, 1943, Senior Lieutenant Panteliev crossed to the right bank of the Dnieper, reconnoitered the area for the accumulation of battalion forces. During the assault on the village of Borodaevka, he was the first to rush into the village and, shouting 'Hooray!' led the battalion to capture the height. He personally destroyed two enemy firing points with grenades, where 14 Nazis were located, captured two enemy machine guns, and took six soldiers prisoner. During the repulsion of the counterattack, he displayed valor and heroism, inspiring his example the fighters and commanders to steadfastness and fearlessness.

He personally participated in the battle formations of the companies in repelling eight enemy counterattacks, was wounded, but continued to fight..."

...Only a few meters remained to the enemy trenches. And every step was controlled by death. But the fighters did not stop. Only those who were pierced by enemy bullets ceased their advance. Here fell the battalion commander, and Panteliev took command. He was the first to burst into the enemy positions, followed by the entire battalion.

He remained forever in the memory of all the fighters who rushed after him into the enemy camp: with his hand raised up and forward, with his mouth open in a shout — "Forward! For the Motherland!"

An enemy mine exploded at the feet of the brave commander, as if putting a period. But he survived!

Exactly one month later, Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin shook hands with the Hero of the Soviet Union Gavriil Frolovich Panteliev.

Then there were hospitals in Kharkov, Tashkent, Almaty, Frunze.

Unfortunately, people are not eternal, but their feats and examples are immortal. This is what I thought about when I read the essay of a schoolboy in the village of Gavrilovna, Sokuluk district, the homeland of Gavriil Panteliev.
