Sooronbay Jusuyev


Born on May 15, 1925, in the village of Kyzyl-Zhar, in the mountainous valley of Alay-Kuu in the Kara-Kulja district of the Osh region. After finishing rural school, he was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army, serving as a signalman in the renowned 8th Guards Division named after I.V. Panfilov from 1943 to 1945. He was wounded twice in battle.

After demobilization in 1946-1947, he worked as the responsible secretary at the editorial office of the Soviet district newspaper "For Communism". In 1949, he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Kyrgyz Literature and Language at the Osh State Institute of Teachers. From 1949 to 1951, he was the head of a department at the editorial office of the Osh regional newspaper. In 1956, he graduated from the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow.

From 1957 to 1959, he served as the chief editor of the literary and artistic magazine "Ala-Too", and then as the responsible secretary of the satirical magazine "Chalkan". From 1960 to 1986, he was a literary consultant in the apparatus of the Union of Writers of the Kyrgyz SSR.

S. Jusuyev received his first award at the front as a soldier of the 8th Guards Division named after I.V. Panfilov. By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated November 14, 1944, S. Jusuyev was awarded the soldier's combat medal "For Courage". After the war, he received the medal "For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945", as well as numerous anniversary medals. On March 11, 1958, S. Jusuyev was awarded the Order of the "Patriotic War" I class.

He was awarded the medal "For Labor Distinction" twice – on November 1, 1958, and March 3, 1978.

In 1966, S. Jusuyev was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR, and in 1971, 1972, 1975, and 1985, he received Certificates of Honor from the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR. In 1966, S. Jusuyev was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Soviet of the Yakut ASSR, and in 1974, a Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR.

By the decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic dated February 4, 1997 (Decree No. 46), for his significant contribution to the development of culture and art in the Kyrgyz Republic, S. Jusuyev was awarded the medal "Dank".

For his significant contribution to the development of Kyrgyz literature, Sooronbay Jusuyev was awarded the honorary title of People's Poet of Kyrgyzstan in 1981. For his published book of poems in 1990 at the Moscow Voenizdat "My Life", S. Jusuyev became a laureate of the All-Union Literary Prize named after A. Fadeev (Gold Medal). In 1995, he was awarded the title "Excellence in Public Education of the Kyrgyz Republic". In the same year, the Republic of Kazakhstan awarded him the honorary title "Kazakhstan's Honored Worker".

On November 2, 1998, Sooronbay Jusuyev became a laureate of the State Prize named after Toktogul for the poem novel "Kurmanzhan Datka", which was published in 1994.

By the decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic dated June 8, 2000 (Decree No. 150), for his significant contribution to the development of Kyrgyz literature and active public activity, S. Jusuyev was awarded the Order of "Manas" III class.

S. Jusuyev is an honorary citizen of the cities of Bishkek and Osh, as well as an honorary professor at Osh State University and the Kyrgyz-Uzbek University. His name is carried by a secondary school in the village of Say-Talaa in the Kara-Kulja district and a secondary school in the village of Jarooz in the Kara-Suu district.

In 2005, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) awarded Sooronbay Jusuyev the Gold Medal for significant creative achievements.

By the decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic dated February 13, 2007 (Decree No. 59), for his outstanding contribution to the treasury of national culture, the development of spiritual values of the Kyrgyz people, and his high civic position in creative and public activities, the poet Sooronbay Jusuyev was awarded the highest distinction "Hero of the Kyrgyz Republic" and presented with the special badge "Ak Shumkar".
