The Eurasian Economic Commission has begun analyzing proposals received from the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia regarding the increase of tariffs on clothing imported from third countries into the EAEU territory. Russian authorities intend to raise tariffs on 80 categories of light industry goods.

This list includes items such as hats, coats, jackets, trousers, sweaters and pullovers, sports suits, as well as various types of underwear, including toilet and kitchen items.

It is proposed to set the tariff rate at 15%, but with a minimum amount in currency per kilogram. For example, for some goods, a rate of €1.5 per kg is planned, for others — €1.88 and even €2.25.

So far, a preliminary public discussion of this initiative has taken place. Representatives of Russian associations of omnichannel trade (AKORT) and online trade (AKIT) have expressed negative opinions on this matter.

They point out that the production capacities of domestic manufacturers are already nearly fully loaded, and a sharp increase in production is impossible. At the same time, over 87% of this product in Russia is imported goods.
