The expert noted that a significant share of vegetables and fruits in the markets is currently imported. Moreover, the quality and taste characteristics of these products significantly lag behind those produced in Kyrgyzstan a few years ago. Akimaliev pointed out that the production of imported goods often involves high levels of mineral fertilizers, as well as antibiotics, hormones, and GMOs.
According to Akimaliev, Kyrgyzstan has favorable natural conditions, including clean water, air, and an ecologically clean environment, which creates excellent opportunities for the development of organic production. He believes that food security should be ensured through local products rather than imports.
The academician also emphasized the need for the accelerated establishment of processing enterprises, which would allow for the provision of products produced at the local level.
Speaking about quality control, Akimaliev stated that the responsibility for monitoring imported products should lie with specialized state bodies, such as the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Food Processing Industry. He stressed that phytosanitary and sanitary control over imported goods should be significantly stricter.
The scientist also added that there are instances of returning substandard products; however, he assesses that border control remains insufficiently effective.
