A group of researchers from the University of Florida conducted an interesting study that showed that proper habits can "rejuvenate" the brain by as much as eight years compared to biological age.

Over two years, scientists observed 128 adult participants, primarily middle-aged and elderly, many of whom suffered from chronic joint pain caused by knee osteoarthritis. Using MRI and machine learning methods, they determined the "brain age" of each participant and compared it to their actual age.

The results of the study, published in the journal Brain Communications, are encouraging: lifestyle plays a significant role in the brain aging process.

During the analysis, it was found that certain factors contribute to the brain appearing older than its actual age. These include chronic pain, low income, lack of education, and social difficulties, but over time these correlations weakened.

Conversely, protective habits showed a consistent and noticeable effect. The researchers identified the following:

Participants who reported the highest number of these positive factors began the study with brains that appeared eight years younger than their actual age. Importantly, the aging of their brains continued to slow down throughout the two-year observation period.

People can influence these factors to some extent. For example, one can change their perception of stress, improve sleep quality, and develop optimism.

The study confirms that healthy behavioral factors not only reduce pain levels and improve physical condition but also significantly strengthen overall brain health.

Each healthy habit brings its own benefits, and the more such habits you incorporate into your life, the stronger your brain's protection becomes.

Scientists have long established that an aging brain is more susceptible to cognitive disorders, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. The difference between a person's actual age and how old their brain appears serves as an important indicator of the overall health of this organ.

Although the study focused on participants with chronic pain, the authors emphasize that beneficial habits can positively impact brain aging in anyone.

Thus, the secret to a youthful brain lies not in expensive procedures or pills, but in simple daily choices: adequate sleep, communication with loved ones, an optimistic outlook on life, and the ability to cope with stress.
