The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of the causes of mental disorders and dementia, based on the state of the brain at different age periods.
About 4,000 people under the age of 90 participated in the study, and their brains were scanned to analyze the connections between neurons.
According to the researchers' findings, the brain retains its youthful activity until the age of 30, which aligns with the common belief regarding the peak of human physical development.
Experts are confident that the results of the study will help better understand how the risks of mental illnesses and dementia change throughout life.
The process of brain change associated with the accumulation of knowledge and experience is not linear and continuous.
Instead, the study revealed the following five stages of brain functioning:
- childhood — from birth to 9 years;
- adolescence — from 9 to 32 years;
- adulthood — from 32 to 66 years;
- beginning of aging — from 66 to 83 years;
- late aging — starting from 83 years.
