Depression May Accelerate the Deterioration of Memory and Cognitive Functions - Study
The findings were published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
The research was based on data from over 9,000 participants in the national CHARLS survey, who were observed over a period of five years. The results showed that individuals with pronounced depressive symptoms experience a decrease in contact with family, friends, and neighbors over time, as well as a reduction in activity in public life. This, in turn, negatively affects memory and the ability to concentrate.
The researchers estimated that social isolation accounts for about three percent of the impact of depression on cognitive functions. Although this may seem insignificant, this factor can have serious consequences in the context of an aging population.
The authors of the study emphasize that depression functions as a chronic stressor that depletes internal resources and reduces the desire to interact with others. They also recommend combining the treatment of depressive disorders with programs aimed at strengthening social ties, such as regular communication, participation in support groups, and the use of digital platforms for interaction. According to the researchers, such measures may help maintain cognitive health for a longer period and reduce the likelihood of developing dementia.
