A team of international researchers has developed a neuroimplant measuring just 2×2 mm, which is capable of restoring vision even in patients with complete blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study was published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

During the trials, 32 participants were observed over 12 months using the PRIMA system. The results showed that 80% of the subjects demonstrated clinically significant improvement in vision after one year. Some serious side effects were also recorded, but they were quickly resolved.

The implant is expected to become available in European Union countries next year.
