Threats to the lives of Kyrgyz citizens are becoming increasingly relevant
As a result of a study conducted by the National Institute of Public Health, it was found that in some regions of Kyrgyzstan, such as Maili-Suu, the village of Soviet and Ak-Tyuz, children exhibit elevated levels of lead in their blood. It has been discovered that every fifth child (21%) has a lead concentration exceeding 5 µg/dL, which requires intervention according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization.
“Such cases were recorded during the Soviet era in areas with active industrial enterprises, such as mercury and metallurgical plants. Lead negatively affects human health, contributing to the development of serious diseases. It is dangerous for the brain and can adversely affect the nervous and muscular systems. This is especially critical for children. Therefore, the Ministry of Health should pay attention to this data and initiate further research in educational institutions,” emphasized former representative of the Public Supervisory Council of the Ministry of Health Baktygul Jumagulova in a conversation with Vesti.kg.
Additionally, the specialist warned citizens to be cautious when they are offered to play with liquid mercury during celebrations and are told that it is safe.
“We have not only restricted the use of mercury thermometers. It is not just the mercury vapors that are dangerous. Even the slightest skin damage or entry of the substance into the bloodstream can have serious consequences. Symptoms of poisoning may manifest significantly later,” she added.
It is worth noting that at the fair in Manas, dedicated to the Independence Day of Kyrgyzstan, children and adults were invited to touch liquid mercury with their bare hands at the stand of the Haidarkan Mercury Plant.
