WHO recommends consuming at least 400 grams (or five servings) of vegetables and fruits per day, which helps reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases and provides the necessary amount of fiber.
- About three servings (approximately 300 g) should consist of vegetables and greens.
- Two servings (approximately 200 g) should be fruits.
“At the same time, there is an increase in the production of processed foods, rapid urbanization, and lifestyle changes, which lead to changes in dietary habits. People are increasingly choosing high-calorie foods that contain fats, free sugars, and salt, while the consumption of vegetables, fruits, and other sources of fiber, such as whole grains, remains low,” comments WHO.
Among the recommendations for improving the consumption of vegetables and fruits are:
- including vegetables in every meal;
- consuming fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks;
- choosing seasonal fruits and vegetables;
- variety in the selection of fruits and vegetables.
