Almost 76% of Kyrgyzstanis eat fewer vegetables and fruits than recommended by WHO

According to data presented in the report by Bubuzhan Arykbaeva, Deputy Minister of Health, 75.9% of citizens of Kyrgyzstan do not consume an adequate amount of vegetables and fruits as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Studies STEPS 1 and STEPS 2 conducted over the past ten years confirm these findings.

WHO recommends consuming at least 400 grams (or five servings) of vegetables and fruits per day, which helps reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases and provides the necessary amount of fiber.

The report emphasizes that a balanced diet throughout life helps prevent various nutritional disorders and related diseases.

“At the same time, there is an increase in the production of processed foods, rapid urbanization, and lifestyle changes, which lead to changes in dietary habits. People are increasingly choosing high-calorie foods that contain fats, free sugars, and salt, while the consumption of vegetables, fruits, and other sources of fiber, such as whole grains, remains low,” comments WHO.
