The prosecution accuses Yoon of attempting to discredit his opponents, including the then-leader of the opposition Lee Jae-myung, labeling them as "anti-state forces" and detaining them.
According to the charges, Yoon and Kim also tried to create a pretext for declaring martial law by exacerbating relations with North Korea through covert drone activities.
Yoon Suk-yeol, who is now 65 years old, denies all the charges against him.The trial has now entered the stage of closing arguments, and a decision is expected to be made in February, exactly one year after Yoon's impeachment and removal from office by the Constitutional Court.
It is worth noting that since 1997, no death sentences have been carried out in South Korea, although this measure has not been abolished.
