Similar charges were previously brought against former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, as well as former head of the Armed Forces' Counterintelligence Command Yeo In-hyeon.
In December 2024, Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law in the country, which subsequently led to his impeachment by parliament. He was accused of organizing a coup and was arrested in January.
