From April to November 2025, there were over 230 bear attacks on humans in Japan, resulting in 13 fatalities, Bloomberg reports. This number has already surpassed previous records set in the country, just four months before the end of the year.

According to statistics, bear sightings increased to nearly 37,000 during this period, while last year this figure was only 18,000. To combat the rise in bear attacks, the government allocated 22 million dollars, but so far this has not yielded significant results.

The main reason for such bear behavior is considered to be the reduction of agricultural lands that were previously located in mountainous areas. With the decrease in available resources, brown bears are increasingly leaving their usual habitats and encountering people in cities.
