According to the Afghanistan Red Crescent Society, the number of victims of the devastating earthquake has reached 1124 people, with 3251 injured. More than 8000 homes have been destroyed as a result of the disaster.
According to CNN, the earthquake occurred on August 31 around midnight local time, with a magnitude of 6.0. The epicenter was located 27 km northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, at a depth of about 8 km. Kunar province was the hardest hit, where at least three villages were destroyed. The destruction also affected three other provinces: Laghman, Nuristan, and Panjshir.
In response to the tragedy, the Taliban government has requested international assistance. The UN has allocated $5 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), and the UK has announced a donation of £1 million to help those affected. Humanitarian aid has also been joined by China, India, and Switzerland, reports BBC News.
Search and rescue operations in the remote mountainous areas most affected by the earthquake are complicated by heavy rains, landslides, and damaged roads.
