Nancy Pelosi, the 85-year-old congresswoman and chief opponent of Donald Trump, has announced the end of her career in Congress. This news was published in The Guardian.
In her video address, Pelosi announced her decision not to run for re-election and to conclude her 20-year political career, including her time as the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“It has been a tremendous honor for me to stand on the floor of the House of Representatives and represent the people of San Francisco,” she noted.
The publication emphasizes that in her role as Speaker, Pelosi played a crucial role in advancing numerous legislative initiatives concerning the administrations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Even after losing the Speakership, she remained a significant figure in the Democratic Party and actively helped her colleagues navigate political challenges, including Trump’s second term. In 2024, Pelosi convinced Biden not to run after unsuccessful debates with Trump.
Some of her allies have already announced their intentions to leave the political arena. Pelosi's announcement coincided with California residents supporting "Proposition 50" — a redistricting reform that she actively promoted, although she did not comment on her future political plans until after the voting concluded.
Pelosi grew up in a political family in Baltimore and later moved to California, where she began her career. She entered politics at the age of 47 after many years spent at home with five children.
For Republicans, Pelosi was one of their main targets. In 2022, this led to an attack on her husband when an armed man broke into their home looking for Pelosi. After the events of January 6, when the Capitol was stormed, she insisted on the continuation of Congress's work, initiated Trump's second impeachment, and established a committee to investigate these events.
