“Not all representatives by proxy should be considered human rights defenders”
Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova, a human rights activist, commented on the detention of a woman suspected by the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) of extorting $50,000.
In its press release, the GKNB identifies the detained individual as a human rights defender.
“Judging by the release, she acted as a representative by proxy. These are different roles. According to the law, citizens and victims can appoint ordinary people as representatives. It is incorrect to label all representatives by proxy as human rights defenders. Not everyone involved in legal proceedings is a human rights defender; in most cases, they represent the interests of their client, which is not always related to human rights,” noted Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova.
