The situation repeats itself every year
Once again, Bishkek is facing the problem of polluted air, finding itself among the cities with the lowest air quality. This data is provided by the Iqair portal, which monitors air pollution levels in real-time.
Recently, the capital of Kyrgyzstan ranked third in the list of the most polluted cities, but today the situation has improved slightly, and Bishkek has moved to sixth place.
Dmitry Pereyaslavsky, an ecologist and urbanist, commented on the situation in an interview with Vesti.kg, stating: “Many studies on air pollution have been conducted. The Hydrometeorological Center also records exceedances of the maximum allowable levels of harmful substances. This is related to the start of the heating season when, due to the cold, people begin to use low-quality coal. Unfortunately, we face this problem every year.”
Unfortunately, during the autumn-winter period, trees are unable to significantly improve air quality, as the smog enveloping the city cannot be neutralized by their presence.
“Trees are effective in combating harmful substances only during the growing season—spring and summer—when they are covered with leaves. At this time of year, their impact is minimal. The hope that trees can save us from smog is a misconception,” added Pereyaslavsky.
