Scientists have made a sensational discovery by finding a unique DNA repair mechanism in Greenland whales, which can live for over two centuries. This discovery could open new horizons in developing methods to help extend human life and maintain health.

The most important element of this process is the CIRBP protein. Since DNA damage occurs constantly, its accumulation leads to aging and various diseases. Research has shown that the CIRBP protein is activated at low temperatures and functions as a highly efficient repair system: it quickly and accurately removes damaged DNA segments, minimizing the risk of mutations.

For their experiments, scientists needed live whale cells. According to information published in The New York Times, this became possible thanks to collaboration with the indigenous peoples of Alaska engaged in traditional hunting. Researchers obtained small tissue samples from animals caught during hunts to study their unique properties in laboratory conditions.

After introducing the gene encoding the CIRBP protein into human cells, the rate of DNA repair doubled. This discovery promises the possibility for people to maintain health for a longer period.
