Yulia Ulitina, a psychiatrist, explained in an interview on "Birinchi Radio" how to determine the presence of a mental disorder.

According to recent data from Health Minister Erkin Checheybaev, 11% of the population in Kyrgyzstan suffers from mental disorders. As the minister noted, a National Mental Health Strategy is being developed in the country, which is an important step after a long time.

Ulitina emphasized that many people cannot recognize in time that they are starting to experience depression or anxiety. "Bad mood and depression are different things. Mood can change depending on circumstances. For example, a student in a class with an unpopular teacher may feel down, but as soon as they leave the classroom, their mood improves. Depression, however, does not pass so quickly and can last for a long time," she explained.

According to the psychiatrist, depression has various manifestations and is divided into three degrees: mild, moderate, and severe. Specialists rely on the criteria of ICD-10 for diagnosis and treatment. "It is quite difficult to cope with this problem on your own," she added.

She recommended paying attention to one's emotional and physical state, as well as cognitive functions, including memory and attention. "If you notice a decline in these functions, it may indicate that changes are occurring in your body. Physical symptoms, such as muscle pain or sleep disturbances, can also be the first signals that you should consult a specialist," Ulitina noted.

The psychiatrist also emphasized that symptoms can manifest differently in people. "If you have been under stress for a long time and take everything to heart, it can negatively affect your health, including the cardiovascular and digestive systems," she added.

Regarding the need to see a doctor for mild anxiety or stress, Ulitina noted that it depends on the duration of these states. "If you were able to resolve your problem and the anxiety has disappeared, it was likely just a psychological defense mechanism. However, if you continue to experience sleep disturbances, appetite changes, and a constant feeling of anxiety, it is worth considering a visit to a specialist," she concluded.
