Expert: Meat prices in Kyrgyzstan could become simply astronomical

But Kyrgyzstanis will not give up meat

According to economist Arslan Omurzakov, meat prices in Kyrgyzstan could reach astronomical heights after the cancellation of state regulation and in the event of an increase in export volumes. He shared his opinion with Vesti.kg in light of the upcoming end of the control that was introduced in response to the sharp rise in meat product prices.

Omurzakov noted that neighboring countries are experiencing a rise in meat prices, making export more attractive for producers. Additionally, production costs are increasing, including livestock maintenance and feed, which also affects the final price.

Despite possible price changes, the level of meat and dairy product consumption in the country will remain high. The expert suggests that there may be a slight decrease in consumption or a shift to more affordable alternatives, such as chicken, eggs, and potatoes. “The population is looking for cheaper options if prices for current products are rising,” he added.

Arslan Omurzakov also noted that the government is taking steps to support socially vulnerable groups by increasing pensions and salaries for budget employees. He believes it is advisable to increase funding for targeted assistance programs, as inflation may lead to an increase in poverty.

The economist believes that temporary measures of state price regulation have helped reduce the frenzy in the market, as many resellers are profiting from rising prices. “If meat exports increase again, it could lead to a serious shortage in the domestic market, and prices could become simply astronomical,” he warned.

It is worth noting that on November 12, a three-month period will end during which the state regulated meat prices. During this period, the price of beef was 680 soms per kilogram, and lamb was 690 soms.

However, according to Kyrgyzstanis, actual meat prices in supermarkets ranged from 710 to 890 soms per kilogram, in regular stores from 700 to 840 soms, and at markets from 650 to 800 soms.
