Mattel, the American company, has introduced a new Barbie doll that exhibits characteristics of autism spectrum disorder, as reported by BBC News.

This doll has a slightly off-center gaze, and on her ears are noise-canceling headphones. These headphones are not just an accessory: they help her find calm in situations where surrounding sounds can be too overwhelming. Additionally, Barbie has a spinner and a tablet that serve as means of alternative and augmentative communication — allowing her to express her thoughts and feelings beyond words.
The doll is dressed in a loose-fitting dress and flat shoes.

The creation of this doll was made possible through collaboration with the non-profit organization ASAN, which advocates for the rights of people with autism.

Previously, Mattel also released Barbie dolls representing people with disabilities: among them were a blind Barbie, a Barbie with Down syndrome, and a Barbie with type 1 diabetes.

This new collection of "special" dolls aims to broaden children's and their parents' understanding of the diversity of human nature.
