Today, January 20, the committee on constitutional legislation is reviewing the bills: "On the Council for Justice Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic," "On the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic and Local Courts," as well as "On the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic." These amendments are aimed at improving the situation with gender equality.
In her speech, Talieva reminded that Kyrgyzstan had previously signed Convention No. 190 of the International Labour Organization, which requires the country to amend its legislation to combat violence and harassment in the workplace, as well as to achieve gender equality.
According to her, gender inequality is still observed in the executive branch.
“Currently, out of 22 members of the cabinet of ministers, there is only one woman, and just recently another one was appointed, but her approval has not yet taken place. All other ministers are men. Despite this, government representatives boast about their achievements in the field of gender equality on the international stage,” she noted.
Data analysis shows that among 76 deputy ministers and heads of departments, only 13 are women, which is just 17%. There are no women in the representative offices, and among the deputy akims, their number is about 35%. In the history of Kyrgyzstan, there has been only one female akim, who recently became a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh. Women are most often appointed to positions as deputy akims and governors for social issues. The vice-premier responsible for the social block is also usually a woman. Out of 48 deputy mayors across the country, only 10 are women, which is about 20%,” Talieva added.
