The reduction of poverty levels in Kyrgyzstan is progressing slowly, reported Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov at a joint meeting of the parliamentary groups "Eldik" and "Ala-Too."

Leader of the "Eldik" group Akylbek Tumonbaev emphasized that the deputies invited representatives of the government to discuss issues related to the implementation of legislative initiatives on state assistance. He also noted that a bill was proposed to introduce benefits for all children under 12 years old.

Edil Baisalov reported that during the pandemic, the poverty level among the population rose to 30 percent.

“According to established standards, a person is considered to be living below the poverty line if their annual income is less than 65,000 soms. Last year, the poverty level was 25.7 percent. Despite the measures being taken, the poverty level is decreasing slowly — by only 2 percent per year,” noted the Deputy Prime Minister.

According to him, among children under 16 years old, the poverty level reaches 33 percent, which is equivalent to nearly 950,000 children living in poverty in Kyrgyzstan.

Edil Baisalov also added that the five-year plan of the cabinet of ministers includes a provision to reduce the poverty level to 20 percent, expressing hope that it is possible to achieve a level of 15 percent within five years.
