During the meeting of the Committee of the Jogorku Kenesh on agrarian policy, water resources, subsoil use, ecology, and environmental protection, held on February 9, Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, announced that this year farmers will receive irrigation water through electronic meters.

Torobaev noted that the country has 498 reservoirs with a total design capacity of 1 billion 757 million cubic meters. Currently, these reservoirs contain 884 million cubic meters of water, which is 30-35% less compared to the data from 2025.

The minister also emphasized that during the spring field work, it is planned to sow 1 million 850 thousand hectares. To irrigate 885 thousand hectares of irrigated land, 6 billion 300 million cubic meters of water will be required, as it is planned to irrigate four to five times. In addition, 139 new irrigation facilities will be introduced.

According to Torobaev, starting from 2026, farmers will be provided with water through electronic meters, and 1,500 such devices will be installed.

Furthermore, he added that drip irrigation will be implemented on 20 thousand hectares, of which about 6 hectares will be provided by the state, while the remaining areas will be adapted by farmers themselves.

An example can be seen in the fact that to obtain a wheat harvest from one hectare, 1,200 cubic meters of water is required. Otherwise, the yield may decrease. Farmers themselves have expressed a desire to work based on volumes, the minister noted.
