At a briefing organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Azamat Mambetov reported that over the past fifty years, the glaciers in the country have decreased by approximately 16 percent.

According to information presented by the World Meteorological Organization, the global temperature has risen by 1.9 degrees, which has contributed to the accelerated melting of glaciers. This has led to the formation of about 2,000 high-altitude lakes, 600 of which pose a serious threat.

Azamat Mambetov also noted that in 2024, the Western Zyndan lake, located in the Ton district of the Issyk-Kul region, experienced a breakthrough. Last year, the breakthrough of the Takyr-Tor lake was recorded twice, resulting in the evacuation of approximately one thousand residents.
