All 73 deputies present at the meeting supported the sole candidate.
The Jogorku Kenesh decided to relieve Melis Turganbaev of his duties as chairman of the National Bank, a position he held since June 26, 2024.
On the same day, Almaz Baketaev was approved as the new chairman of the National Bank.
Almaz Baketaev, born on January 20, 1971, in Talas, received higher education at the Polytechnic University and the Kyrgyz National University, specializing in finance and credit.
He began his career in 1993, working in the tax authorities of the Talas region and the Sverdlovsk district of Bishkek. Over the years, he held several positions in the Ministry of Finance, including work in the internal audit service and treasury structures.
Later, he worked in the Bishkek city and Chui regional treasuries. In 2010, Baketaev became the deputy head of the administration of the Lenin district of Bishkek.
From 2010 to 2018, he held various leadership positions in the Ministry of Finance, including deputy minister. He then served as the first deputy mayor of Bishkek and in 2021 was appointed first deputy minister of economy and finance.
Since 2021 and until recently, Baketaev served as acting minister of finance of the Kyrgyz Republic.
