The resignation of Melis Turgunbaev from the position of chairman of the National Bank may be linked to a major investigation into corruption cases at OJSC "Kyrgyzneftegaz." Political scientist Musurkul Kabyldekov expressed his opinion on this situation in an interview with the publication 24.kg.
Kabyldekov noted that law enforcement agencies, as part of the investigation into multi-billion embezzlements, are interrogating everyone who had connections to the entity during the audit period. Since Melis Turgunbaev held leadership positions in "Kyrgyzneftegaz" for many years, his summons to the investigator becomes almost inevitable.
"The fact that the head of the National Bank may be involved in a criminal case, even as a witness, deals a serious blow to the reputation of the country's financial regulator. It is likely that his resignation was premeditated to avoid the negative impact of potential investigative actions on the image of the National Bank," the political scientist added.
