Sergio Mattarella, the President of Italy, has called for the observance of the Olympic Truce on a global level, emphasizing that sport is a powerful means of countering violence, according to local news reports, as reported by the ANSA agency.

In his speech, the Italian leader addressed the international community ahead of the Winter Olympic Games, which will begin on February 6 in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Mattarella noted that sport represents a unique opportunity for peaceful coexistence, capable of uniting people despite political differences.

The President expressed hope that the "unarmed force of sport" could halt military actions in conflict zones during the competition period.

The call for strict adherence to the truce has become an important diplomatic position for Italy, which is hosting the Olympic Games this year. The competitions will last until February 22, and the Italian authorities hope that this period will be a time for global de-escalation.

Mattarella also emphasized that the principles of the Olympic Games should serve as a foundation for international dialogue, demonstrating the superiority of sporting competition over armed conflicts.
