In the village of Karool-Döbö, located in the Ayil district of Chon-Kemin in the Kemin region of Chui Province, lives and works the craftsman Üpölbübü Satarova, who specializes in creating traditional Kyrgyz products – shyrdaks and kiyizes.

She was born on January 10, 1956, in the village of Dön-Aryk in the Chui region, in a large family with eight siblings.

The foundations of handicrafts were mastered by the girl under the guidance of her mother and mother-in-law.

“From a young age, I helped my mother and learned to create shyrdaks [these are felt carpets with traditional patterns] and kiyizes [Kyrgyz wall panels]. After getting married, I had children and acquired a yurt, which I decorated with my own hands. From my mother-in-law, I also learned weaving skills [‘örmök sögü’]. I made many products for my daughters,” she shared.
About 3-4 years ago, Üpölbübü joined the group “Shayir Apalar,” where she actively helps young women master the art of making shyrdaks and kiyizes.

“I took third place in the handicraft competition at the World Nomad Games. Currently, I live in a house with my son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren,” she added.

In her family, she has four daughters and two sons.

“During the Soviet Union, I worked as a cashier in a store. My husband, who was born in 1948 in the village of Karool-Döbö, was a road master in Chon-Kemin. We lived together for 31 years, but unfortunately, he passed away in 2006,” the craftswoman recounted about her life.
