69-year-old Rysbubu Sarchaeva, who lives in the village of Ozgorush in the Bakai-Ata district, is actively engaged in handicrafts, as reported by a Turmush correspondent.

“I started doing handicrafts right after finishing school. I have created many tush kiyiz (wall carpets) and felt products. Currently, I am focused on reviving kurzhuns (large bags),” R. Sarchaeva shared her hobbies.

According to her story, the kurzhun has ancient roots: nomads used them for storing food. For example, there was the ayak kap — a bag for dishes that was hung inside the yurt. The chaban kurzhun was used by shepherds to store personal belongings and food for ten days. Additionally, there was the kuyö kurzhun, in which the bride placed cosmetics, perfumes, and mirrors to later give them to her sisters-in-law. There was also the kudagy kurzhun, containing nine types of clothing and nine scarves — these were gifts for the matchmakers. This kurzhun, in turn, had two parts: one for placing the meat of a ram and the other for bread and sweets.

“Previously, we wove өрмөк ourselves and made threads, which was a very costly process since everything was done by hand. Now, however, the materials are ready, and kurzhuns can be purchased for prices ranging from 600 to 1000 soms. Recently, more and more people prefer to bring kurzhuns as gifts, as they last much longer than a sebets (basket of treats),” Rysbubu apa added.

Rysbubu and her husband are raising four daughters and one son.
