28-year-old Nazgul Paizullaeva from Batken opened her own curtain sewing salon and earns about 50,000 soms a month. A correspondent from Turmush spoke with the craftswoman.

For the past three years, Nazgul has been sewing curtains and accepting orders from all corners of Kyrgyzstan. She began her career in handicrafts with clothing but ultimately decided to focus on curtains and opened a small workshop where she works with one assistant. During the wedding and celebration season, she has orders lined up for 10–15 days in advance.

“After the ninth grade, I enrolled in Osh to study design. No one in my family was involved in crafts, but I decided to develop my skills. I can sew various products—from clothing to bedding, but for the last three years, I have been working only with curtains. The workshop I opened near the market in Batken became too cramped, so I hired an assistant. My plans include expanding the workshop and teaching girls this craft,” she shares.

Now, during the wedding season, many people order curtains for trousseaus. There are also orders from those who are building houses or preparing for festive events. Due to the large number of orders I receive, finished products can only be picked up after 10–15 days. People have changed their preferences: while previously they chose bright and shiny fabrics, now they increasingly prefer simple materials without patterns, which indicates a growing popularity of the “minimalism” style.

On average, my profit is about 50,000 soms a month. Sometimes it is higher, sometimes lower—it depends on the volume of orders. Clients come from different parts of the country, from Bishkek to Leilek.

I purchase all materials in Bishkek and Osh. The price of curtains varies depending on the fabrics used: the more expensive the material, the higher the cost of the product. Unlike clothing, curtains are ordered year-round, regardless of the season,” the craftswoman adds.

Nazgul is married, and she and her husband are raising one child.
