According to claims from an independent developer, the security measures implemented on the platform do not meet necessary standards.
Roblox is the most popular gaming platform among children in the UK in the age group of eight to twelve years.
In an exclusive interview on BBC Radio 5 Live, a developer who requested to remain anonymous stated that parents should constantly monitor their children on the platform, and if that is not possible, they should not allow them to play Roblox.
Representatives of Roblox commented: “Safety is a priority for us, and we implement modern protective measures and filters aimed at preventing the spread of unwanted content and messages, ensuring the safety of all users on our platform.”
In 2024, Roblox had over 80 million daily players, of which about 40% were under 13 years old.
The developer, who goes by "Sam," did not wish to reveal his real name but decided to reach out to the BBC after listening to an interview with Matt Kaufman, a security expert at Roblox.
In that interview, Kaufman mentioned a number of security measures, including mandatory age verification, which will be implemented starting January 2026 for all users in the UK.
Sam, who works on the platform as an independent developer, also collaborates with a non-profit organization focused on internet safety on a voluntary basis.
He noted that his personal experience shows that safety on the platform is far from what Kaufman described.
Dangerous or Violent Content
Roblox allows users to create their own games or participate in games developed by others. The platform represents an open world where players can interact with each other. Developers are required to provide a description of the game and specify age restrictions that define the appropriate age groups.
Anyone can create games and earn income through advertising or by charging other users. Some developers also participate in a program that allows them to receive payments from Roblox based on user activity or attracting new audiences.
Critics argue that the platform should do more to protect its young users, with some expressing concerns that Roblox has become a target for pedophiles. Others believe that games created on the platform may expose children to violent or harmful content.
Sam stated: “I have observed users on the platform being lured into unwanted relationships with strangers.”
According to him, as a safety observer, he has also seen instances where users attempted to lure others off the platform to communicate outside the game, which he claims “Roblox prohibits.”
Sam added: “I have encountered games where the goal is to shoot as many people as possible in a remake of the Sandy Hook or Columbine events. I have seen versions of Epstein's Island on Roblox.”
He mentioned that reports of dangers can be submitted through a special form; however, “only 30% of such reports are addressed.”
When asked for recommendations for parents who are just starting to familiarize themselves with Roblox, Sam replied: “Parents should constantly monitor their children while playing Roblox. If that is not possible, then children should not play Roblox at all.”
In response to a request from the BBC, Roblox stated that they take “swift action against violators of our rules.” They also emphasized that the age verification process is certified by independent experts, allowing children to interact only with users of approximately the same age.
“We continuously monitor user behavior. If we notice a discrepancy between their actions and their stated age, we offer them to undergo age verification again,” the company added.
Global Bans
This is not the first time Roblox has faced questions about the safety of its young users.
In March 2025, Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki told BBC News about the company's extensive efforts to ensure children's safety.
However, he urged parents to trust their instincts.
“If you don’t like it, don’t let your children play Roblox,” he said.
“Although it may seem illogical, I always trust parents in their decisions.”
Since then, Roblox has implemented mandatory age verification worldwide and made changes to its security system, including bans on children communicating with adults in chat.
In countries like Russia and Turkey, Roblox is completely banned due to concerns about child safety.
Indonesia has also added Roblox to the list of platforms banned for individuals under 16, which will take effect on March 28.
In Australia, restrictions on social media use for individuals under 16 do not apply to Roblox, although some activists are calling for its ban.
The UK government is also consulting on a potential ban on children's use of social media and exploring other measures to enhance youth safety online, including app usage time limits and a curfew.
Recently, trials of these potential measures were announced.
It remains unclear whether Roblox will be affected by any social media bans in the UK, as the government has not specified which platforms may be subject to restrictions.
