The administration of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has confirmed its intention to sell weapons to Taiwan, which include modern missile systems, self-propelled howitzers, and various types of missiles, with a total value exceeding $11 billion.

According to Reuters, this deal includes eight contracts for 82 HIMARS systems and 420 ATACMS missiles, totaling more than $4 billion. The package will also include 60 self-propelled howitzers and associated equipment worth about $4 billion. Taiwan will receive drones worth $1 billion, software worth $1 billion, Javelin and TOW anti-tank missiles worth $700 million, helicopter spare parts worth $96 million, and kits for upgrading Harpoon missiles worth $91 million.

However, for this military aid package to be implemented, it must be approved by the U.S. Congress. If lawmakers give their consent, this will be the second arms sale to Taiwan since Trump returned to the White House.

On Thursday, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China called on the U.S. to immediately cease arming the region.

“These actions violate the principle of one China and the provisions of the three joint Sino-U.S. communiqués, undermine China's sovereignty and security, and send an extremely erroneous signal to forces advocating Taiwan's independence,” the office stated.

For reference, Beijing considers Taiwan to be part of its territory, and recognition of the "one China" principle is a prerequisite for countries that maintain diplomatic relations with China. The U.S. has official diplomatic relations with the PRC while simultaneously engaging with the Taiwan administration.
