NATO Intelligence: Russia May Be Developing Weapons to Attack Starlink Satellites
Some experts express doubts regarding the feasibility of such a system, noting that it could lead to uncontrollable chaos in space. The consequences would affect thousands of satellites from various countries, including those of Russia and China. Victoria Samson, a space security specialist from the Secure World Foundation, expressed skepticism about this development. In contrast, Brigadier General Christopher Horner, commander of the Canadian Space Forces, believes such a scenario is quite possible, citing previous accusations against Russia for developing nuclear weapons for space.
Intelligence data also indicates that Moscow perceives Starlink as a significant threat, as thousands of satellites from this system in low orbit play a crucial role in supporting Ukraine. Ukrainian military forces actively use the high-speed Starlink internet for communication and coordination of actions.
The metallic pellets may have a small diameter—only a few millimeters—making them virtually invisible to tracking systems. This complicates the establishment of accountability for potential attacks. Over time, such pellets may degrade, posing a threat to other space objects, including the International Space Station and China's Tiangong station.
Analysts believe that the mere possibility of such weapons existing could be used by Russia as a means of pressure. Clayton Swoup, an expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, characterized such developments as "weapons of fear," intended for deterrence. However, the risk of damaging its own space systems may serve as a deterrent for Russia in terms of deploying or using such weaponry.
