After the recent shooting on the beach in Sydney, Australian authorities announced a new gun buyback program, as reported by BBC News.

This initiative aims to acquire excess, recently banned, and illegal firearms. It is expected that a large number of weapons will be collected and destroyed, which the government estimates could amount to hundreds of thousands.

Additionally, the program plans to introduce restrictions on the number of firearms that one person can possess, clarify the types of permitted weapons, and tighten licensing requirements.

This will be the largest gun control initiative since the Port Arthur tragedy in 1996, when 35 people were killed in an attack, leading to the implementation of some of the strictest gun control measures in the world.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking to reporters, noted that there are now over 4 million firearms in Australia, exceeding the figures at the time of the Port Arthur incident.

On December 14, an attack carried out by two armed men inspired by the ideology of the "Islamic State" (banned in Russia) resulted in the deaths of 15 people, including a child. The attack occurred during a Jewish holiday at the famous Bondi Beach. Charges on 59 counts, including 15 murders and committing a terrorist act, have been filed against 24-year-old Navid Akram, whose father Sajid was killed during the attack.
