In South Africa, unknown assailants carried out a mass shooting in a bar.
According to police, ten people died at the scene, and two more died in a medical facility. Police spokesperson Atlanda Mate stated that the motives of the perpetrators remain unclear.
South Africa continues to hold one of the leading positions in the world for murder rates. In 2024, the country recorded over 26,000 murders, averaging more than 70 cases per day. Despite strict gun control laws, a significant portion of crimes is committed using illegal firearms.
Mass shootings in bars and taverns have become a common occurrence in South Africa. In 2022, 16 people were killed in Soweto, and on the same day, four more died in another bar. The police emphasize that unlicensed establishments pose a serious problem: from April to September of this year, over 11,000 such bars were closed, and more than 18,000 people were arrested for illegal alcohol sales.

Events like this are not limited to bars alone. In September of last year, in the Eastern Cape, 18 people were killed in two mass shootings that occurred just minutes apart on the same street, among whom were 15 women.
