More than 2,500 law enforcement officers are involved in the operation


During a significant police operation aimed at combating criminal gangs in Rio de Janeiro, at least 64 people have died, according to CNN Brasil.

According to the publication, among the deceased are 60 gang members and 4 law enforcement officers. The operation, named Operação Contenção ("Containment"), is part of a state initiative to curb the territorial expansion of the criminal group CV (Comando Vermelho — "Red Command") and to apprehend its leaders operating in Rio and other regions of Brazil. The police are executing 100 arrest warrants for CV members, including 30 individuals from other Brazilian states.

More than 2,500 law enforcement officers are involved in the operation. So far, 81 people have been arrested, including a suspect believed to be the financial operator Edgar Alves de Andrade, known as Doca or Bear, one of the leaders of the "Red Command".

During the special operation, the police seized ten assault rifles, one pistol, three mobile phones, and nine motorcycles. Two suspects with gunshot wounds are currently in custody at a medical facility.

Three local residents were also injured by "stray" bullets and were hospitalized at Getúlio Vargas Hospital. One of the injured was a woman who was hit by a ricochet while training in a gym but has already been discharged.
