Law enforcement agencies have urged people to avoid the area of the incident and seek shelter in safe places. "The police are actively responding to the situation at Bondi Beach," their statement said.
Currently, two suspects have been detained, but the operation by local forces is ongoing. Authorities reported that among the 16 deceased, there is a child who died in a children's hospital in Sydney located in the Randwick area.
About 40 people remain in hospitals following the attack, including two police officers whose condition is assessed as serious but stable. The ages of the deceased range from 10 to 87 years, the police reported.
