In Russia, a 24-hour "cooling-off period" for local operators' SIM cards may be introduced soon. This will affect subscribers who have not used their SIM card for more than 72 hours or who have been in international roaming, reports Kommersant, citing sources in the telecommunications sector.

During this time, users will not be able to access mobile internet or send SMS messages.

As sources explain, the main goal of these measures is to combat "orphaned" SIM cards that could be used for drone attacks.

Previously, similar restrictions were imposed on foreign SIM cards, which led to some users not receiving messages, complicating access to banking services, notes Kommersant.

Connection can be restored earlier by passing a verification through a captcha via a link in an SMS. This process is similar to what is applied in the USA, where SIM card owners must confirm their identity to resume service.
