X Chat will be available as a standalone application and as part of the X platform, with its launch scheduled for "the next few months." Users will be able to exchange text messages, files, and in the future, also make audio and video calls.
Elon Musk noted that the X team has rethought its approach to security, viewing it not as a simple binary category, but as "degrees of insecurity." The developers aim to make X Chat "the least insecure" among all existing messengers. Musk added that the encryption used in the application is "very high quality" and is currently undergoing rigorous testing. He emphasized that other messengers create potential risks by introducing advertising mechanisms that could be used to access conversations. In X Chat, such mechanisms will disappear.
Currently, the messaging feature in X is available in beta only for Premium subscribers and is an enhanced version of classic direct messages. Users can send text, photos, media files, GIFs, and documents, with identification occurring through unique identifiers (X-handles) rather than phone numbers.
