48 million Gmail passwords leaked online

A database remained accessible for over a month

A recent leak online revealed 48 million Gmail account passwords. According to information from the channel "Dozhd," the database was available without protection for more than a month.

Cybersecurity researcher Jeremy Fowler discovered a significant volume of unprotected database available in the public domain. It contained 149 million unique logins and passwords, among which were the data of 48 million Gmail users. The total leak amounted to 96 gigabytes, and the files were unencrypted, as reported by Forbes.

In addition to Google accounts, this database also collected data from other popular services. The most affected were Facebook with 17 million records, Instagram with 6.5 million, Yahoo with 4 million, Netflix with 3.4 million, and Outlook with 1.5 million records.

Experts suggest that the leak did not occur as a result of hacking Google or Meta servers. Most likely, the database is a collection of information gathered by viruses that steal data directly from infected user devices. Fowler noted that the number of records in the database continued to grow during his investigation.

The database remained publicly accessible for over a month. Fowler reported that he found it difficult to achieve its removal. The hosting provider referred to a subsidiary company that refused to disclose information about the server owner. Access to this data is currently closed.
