The Prime Minister of France adopted the budget for 2026 bypassing parliament

The Prime Minister of France, Sébastien Lecornu, announced the adoption of the budget for 2026 bypassing parliamentary voting, taking responsibility under Article 49, Section 3 of the Constitution. He made this statement during a meeting of the National Assembly, as reported by TASS.

“Our country needs a budget. I, on behalf of the government, take responsibility for the adoption of the draft budget for 2026,” he emphasized. Following his statement, the Vice-President of the National Assembly, Sébastien Chenu, announced the end of the discussion on the draft law.

Recently, the Senate, representing the upper house of parliament, rejected the proposed national budget for 2026. The Minister of Public Accounts, Amélie de Montchalin, during the debates described the project as "imperfect," but noted that it was the result of significant compromise among various political groups.

The budget proposed by the government anticipates cuts in spending in most areas, except for defense, where, on the contrary, an increase in funding of €6.7 billion is expected.

The budget deficit in 2025 was 5.4% of GDP, which negatively affected creditors' trust in France. The authorities planned to reduce this figure to 4.7% in 2026; however, after amendments were made under pressure from the opposition, it is expected that the deficit will remain at 5%.
