As a result of the trial, the jury found the 59-year-old Routh guilty on all charges, including attempted murder, in September 2025. After the verdict was announced, he attempted to harm himself but was stopped by federal marshals.

According to the indictment, Routh planned to kill Trump using a sniper rifle at the Palm Beach golf club on September 15, 2024. His actions were noticed by a Secret Service agent, and Routh was apprehended as he attempted to flee. Trump was unharmed that day.

Routh did not plead guilty and represented himself in court.

During the 2024 election campaign, there were two assassination attempts on Donald Trump. The first occurred on July 13 at a rally in Pennsylvania, where several shots were fired at Trump, resulting in one bullet grazing his ear. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by a Secret Service sniper. The second attempt was determined to have been made by Ryan Routh himself.
